Only 7 of 54 local trade programs tell you when they start and what they cost

Ask anyone who has tried to enroll in trade training what stopped them and you will not usually hear a story about aptitude. You will hear that they could not find out when the next class started or what it would cost. We decided to count how often that is true across Northwest Arkansas, and the answer is that it is nearly always true.

The finding

We verified 54 trade schools, apprenticeships and certification programs within driving distance of Benton and Washington counties. Then we counted how many of them answer the two questions anybody has to answer before they can sign up.

19 of 54 publish a price. 7 of 54 publish a start date. Only 7 publish both. 35 of the 54 publish neither one.

Narrow it to programs physically inside Northwest Arkansas and it stays tight: 31 programs, 6 of which tell you both.

To be clear about what this is and is not: this is not a measure of program quality, and it is not our data gap. It is a count of what these institutions put on their own public websites, checked page by page. Several of them are good programs that are hard to buy.

Why this is not just annoying

Here is the part that turns an irritation into a real barrier. Some of the money that would pay for this training has deadlines that run backward from the start date.

The Arkansas Workforce Challenge Scholarship, which is aimed squarely at short workforce training and whose maximum award rose to the lesser of program cost or $3,000 for 2026-2027, requires students to apply at least 30 days before enrolling. The Arkansas Future Grant has fixed deadlines of July 1 for fall and January 10 for spring.

Now put yourself in the position of someone who wants to start welding school. To use that scholarship money you have to count back 30 days from a start date. If the school does not publish a start date, you cannot do the arithmetic. You call, you wait for a callback, and by the time you have a date the window may be behind you.

The funding exists. We catalogued 115 programs of it. The missing start dates are what make some of it unreachable.

Who does it right

Exactly 7 programs publish both numbers, and they are worth naming because they prove it is not hard:

• Northwest Technical Institute, Springdale. $4, starting August 17, 2026.
• Arkansas HVACr Academy, Springdale. $1, starting August 24, 2026.
• IBEW Local 700 and NECA, Fort Smith. $475, starting First two weeks of April 2027.
• Associated Builders and Contractors, Springdale. $450 per semester for ABC members, starting August 3, 2026.
• Northwest Technical Institute, Springdale. $2, starting August 31, 2026.
• Northwest Technical Institute, Springdale. $2, starting August 25, 2026.
• Northwest Technical Institute, Springdale. $750, starting August 31, 2026.

Almost none of those is a big institution with a web team. A private school, a trade association, a union training committee and a public technical institute each managed a price and a date on a public page.

Correction: the school we got wrong

Northwest Technical Institute in Springdale is the closest dedicated trade school to most readers of this newsletter. It runs 11 programs we could verify, covering welding, HVAC, diesel truck technology, automotive, industrial maintenance and ammonia refrigeration, electronics and automation, CDL, and a high school career center.

10 of those 11 programs publish a price, and 4 publish a firm start date. The diploma programs run from $6,065 for electronics and automation to $9,985 for diesel. The evening certificates are far cheaper: $2,600 for Modern Welding, and $750 for a semester of Monday-night Basic Welding. The CDL program turns out to be two programs, Class A at $4,000 over four weeks and Class B at $2,000 over two, both on published cohort calendars. On top of that the school runs 17 short industrial courses, every one priced, with roughly 93 dated sessions booked out to January 2027.

So why did we report the opposite? Because none of it is findable. The site is script-rendered, and the course detail sits inside click-to-expand panels whose contents load only on click. An automated check reads those pages as empty. So does a search engine. Type the obvious question into Google, what does welding school cost in Springdale, and NWTI's own $7,850 answer is not in the results, because the crawler never saw the page either.

That is a narrower problem than the one we described, and a more fixable one. The facts exist and somebody at the school maintains them carefully: a session two days from now is already marked full, and the calendar runs six months ahead. The prices are simply locked inside a storefront that only opens for a visitor who already knows to click. For the closest dedicated trade school to most of our readers, teaching the exact trades this region is short of, that is a costly place to hide a good answer.

One caution stays on the record. The HVAC page lists start dates of August 24 and 25, 2025, beside an application deadline of August 3, 2026. The comparable evening certificate shows August 25, 2026. We have published the $2,500 price and the deadline, and deliberately left the start date blank, because we are not willing to print a date we think is a year out of date. Take NWTI back out of the count and the wider picture is unchanged: of the 43 other programs we checked, 3 publish both a price and a start date. The regional gap is real. NWTI is no longer the example of it.

What would fix it

For schools: two lines per program page. Next start date, and total cost including fees. If the cost varies, publish a range and say what moves it. If the start date is not set, publish the month and the date it will be confirmed. That is a smaller job than the enrollment it would generate.

For students right now, the workaround is a phone call, so make it an efficient one. Ask for the next start date, the registration cutoff, total cost including tools and testing fees, how many nights a week and which nights, and whether the program is on the Arkansas Future Grant approved list. Those five answers are enough to plan and to apply for aid on time.

We are going to keep asking. Every program on our directory that publishes neither number is marked with a "call for price and dates" flag, and there is a filter to show you only the programs that tell you up front. As we get answers by phone, they go into the directory with the date they were confirmed, so the gap closes in public.
